Wilkin Almánzar

Staff attorney, court and asylum cases

Wilkin grew up above his family's grocery near Market Street and went to law school to understand his uncle's deportation case.

He handles the clinic's court cases: hearings in Newark, bond requests for people held in Elizabeth, and asylum applications from the first draft to the last question at the hearing.

Clients get his cell number for the week before a hearing, and he walks them through the courtroom before the day.

Before your hearing

Wilkin meets every client at least twice before a hearing: once to go through the story and the evidence, and once to practice the questions the judge and the government lawyer are likely to ask.

If a hearing goes badly, he tells you the same day what your options are, including an appeal.
