Asylum

If going back puts you in danger

Asylum is for people who fear harm in their home country because of their race, religion, nationality, political opinion or membership in a particular social group.

You usually have to apply within one year of arriving. If that year has passed, there may be exceptions, or other protection such as withholding of removal. We'll help you tell your story clearly, gather the evidence and prepare for the interview or the hearing.

How an asylum case usually goes

  1. 01

    Step 1: The one-year mark

Counted from your last arrival. We check your dates first.

  2. 02

    Step 2: The application

Your written statement, reports about your country and proof of who you are.

  3. 03

Step 3: Fingerprints and a work permit

Once your application has been pending about five months, you can ask for a work permit.

  4. 04

Step 4: The interview or the hearing

We practice with you beforehand and sit beside you on the day.
