Milagros Huamaní

Executive director and supervising attorney

Milagros came to Paterson from Lima at fourteen and translated for her parents at every appointment.

She started Silk City Legal Aid after years at a larger nonprofit in Newark, so that families could walk to a clinic instead of taking two buses. She supervises every case the clinic takes and still handles family petitions and survivor cases herself.

She explains things twice if you need it, in Spanish or English, and never makes you feel slow for asking.

How she runs the clinic

Every new case is read by two people before anyone files anything. Milagros reviews the plan and the fee with the client herself, so nobody signs an agreement they haven't heard explained.

She keeps Wednesday mornings open for walk-ins and for survivors who can only get away for an hour.
